How to play Blackjack

Six-deck casino-rules blackjack: the dealer stands on 17, blackjack pays 3 to 2, and you can double, split up to 4 hands and take insurance. A card game with play chips: no money, no purchases, no prizes.

  • Played with play chips: they’re worth nothing and can’t be bought or cashed out.
  • A session is 20 hands with 1,000 chips. Bet 10 to 500 per hand (up to 1,000 in practice), always in multiples of 10.
  • Get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Face cards count 10, an ace 1 or 11.
  • Blackjack (an ace + a 10 as your first two cards) pays 3 to 2. Other wins pay 1 to 1; a tie returns your bet.
  • The dealer hits up to 16 and stands on all 17s. Showing an ace or a 10, the dealer checks for blackjack: if it’s there, you only lose your original bet.
  • Double: on your first two cards (after a split too) double your bet and take exactly one card.
  • Split: two cards of the same value become two hands, up to 4 hands. Split aces get one card each, and ace + 10 there is 21, not blackjack.
  • Insurance: only when the dealer shows an ace. It costs half your bet and pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack.
  • Practice: run out of chips and the bank bails you out with 1,000 (3 times a day); every day you’re back to at least 1,000.
  • Keyboard: P hit · Space stand · D double · S split · Y/N insurance · 1–4 chips · R repeat · Enter deal.
